Breath

They were waiting at the hospital. The morphine increased. Her breathing gurgled, struggling to find air. People came, people went. I was alone with her. The sun went down, The sound of trying to breathe in the dark. The sun came back up. More people came and went. I kept her lips moist. I was standing, looking away, crying, drained from the pain. Then I realized the room had gone silent.

This isolated beach is where the Southwest storms breech the road and submerge Sconticut Neck. The waters rise faster and higher on this winward side, and so the open ocean streams down Buist street, across Sconticut Neck road, and then meet the easterly waters of Nasketucket.
