Breath

They were waiting at the hospital. The morphine increased. Her breathing gurgled, struggling to find air. People came, people went. I was alone with her. The sun went down, The sound of trying to breathe in the dark. The sun came back up. More people came and went. I kept her lips moist. I was standing, looking away, crying, drained from the pain. Then I realized the room had gone silent.
